Suresh M.L Raghavan, PhD

Associate Dean for Graduate Education, College of Engineering
Professor, Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering
Biography
Dr. Suresh M.L. Raghavan is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa, with a research focus devices for cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. He earned his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh, where he pioneered early models for predicting abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture based on wall stress analysis. His career bridges engineering and clinical science, bringing biomechanical insight into collaboration with surgeons, radiologists, and interventionalists.
Dr. Raghavan’s work includes use of experimental and computational methods. Experimental methods such as fluid flow loops, tissue mechanical testing, electrochemical methods, fabrication of silicone replicas, etc. Computational methods such as finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, computational geometry, image processing, etc. HIs research has been and is funded by organizations such as NIH, American Heart Association, NSF, Fulbright Foundation, Carver Charitable Trust, and the University of Iowa’s Provost Fund. He has led NIH- and industry-funded research exploring cerebral and aortic aneurysm risk, and developed computational tools now used in both academic and translational research. His publications span biomechanics, imaging, and surgical planning, contributing to a deeper understanding of how structure and stress influence vascular failure.
In addition to his research, Dr. Raghavan is a committed educator and mentor, teaching courses in cardiovascular mechanics and design. He has guided numerous graduate theses and undergraduate research projects, helping shape the next generation of biomedical engineers. His continued goal is to leverage various engineering principles and tools toward enhancing cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine. Dr. Raghavan is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, a Fulbright Distinguished Chair, and a recipient of the University of Iowa President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence.
