Biography

Carlos Alberto Contreras Mesa is a cross-sector project manager whose work spans multinational clinical research, public-sector innovation, and AI-driven technology. He currently serves as Project Manager and Lab Manager of the Cerebrovascular & Neurointerventional Laboratory at University of Iowa Health Care, where he directs the full project-management lifecycle for two concurrent multinational clinical trials  (DIRECT and DONE SYMPLE) across a 40-site network spanning the United States and 20 international sites. Applying rigorous project-management methodologies and maintaining strict ICH-GCP, FDA, and Trial Master File compliance, he safeguards the integrity and efficiency of cerebrovascular research while overseeing a combined $15M research portfolio funded through NIH (R01/R03) and PCORI mechanisms.

Beyond the clinical setting, Carlos is a key figure in the development of technological solutions for infrastructure tracking and complex project management. He led the development of "Jarín-Jarín," an AI-driven analytical system designed to process imagery captured by satellites and drones. This tool enables rigorous project-progress monitoring through visual telemetry, facilitating precise, geospatial, data-driven decision-making and the early detection of stalled or delayed public works. Developed within the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) "Corrupción Cero" accelerator, the venture reached the top-5 finalists among 36 startups from 17 countries.

His academic foundation is global and interdisciplinary:

  • Master of Science in Project Management from Universidad a Distancia de Madrid (UDIMA), Spain.
  • Specialist in Project Management from Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios, Colombia.
  • Bachelor of Science in International Business from EAFIT University, Colombia.

Carlos is also a recognized educator and strategist in the field of Artificial Intelligence. He leads the specialized course "Revolutionizing Workflows with AI," teaching advanced techniques such as Chain of Thought for critical thinking and dynamic content generation. His prior experience includes serving as Project Management Specialist for the Barrancabermeja City Hall (2022–2023), where he structured public-investment projects and strengthened governmental efficiency through strategic team management. He also contributed as an R&D and Innovation Project Manager at UNIPAZ, advising on the management of resources and budgets for high-impact regional projects.
