Santiago Ortega-Gutiérrez, MD, MSc, FAHA, FSVIN
Dr. Santiago Ortega-Gutiérrez is a distinguished physician-scientist specializing in neurointerventional surgery. He serves as the Director of Neurointervention for Neurology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and holds faculty appointments in the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Radiology. Additionally, he is the Program Director of the Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology Fellowship at UIHC.
Dr. Ortega-Gutiérrez earned his medical degree from the University of Alcalá in Madrid, Spain. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Neurology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, followed by fellowships in Neurocritical Care and Stroke at Columbia University, and Endovascular Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai in New York.
His research focuses on cerebral autoregulation, hemodynamics, and the development of novel endovascular therapies for cerebrovascular diseases. He has led and contributed to numerous NIH-funded studies and clinical trials, including MAP-STROKE, DIRECT, and DONE SYMPLE. Dr. Ortega-Gutiérrez has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in advancing stroke care through innovative research.
He currently serves as the President-Elect of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) and Vice Chair of the Mechanical Thrombectomy 2020+ initiative, demonstrating his commitment to improving outcomes for patients with cerebrovascular conditions.
